It was lambing season when we visited Grand View. Daily rounds of the paddocks to check on the newborns offered images of vibrant life and constant reminders of its fragility. About ten percent of the lambs would die from hypothermia, birth complications, fox attacks, or being rejected or ignored by the ewe. Long days were spent picking up the carcasses, delivering stillborns, penning reluctant mothers with their lambs and hunting foxes, but somehow there was still time to reflect, relax, and enjoy a sunset a good meal and good company. |
