The Beach. One of the great joys of being at the beach is sitting in a beach chair and reading something that is so well-written that you get lost in what you are reading and then after several pages spent in a world that is for you entirely an intellectual construct, you look up and see a wave breaking over the top of the page, and you realize that you haven't noticed the sound of the surf, consciously at least, for many minutes. And you come back to the surface of this reality and take a breath of the sea air and then dive deep into the pages again. (6/17/03)
